Be Grateful To be Privileged

“To this day I believe we are here on earth to love, grow, and do what we can to make this world a better place for all people to enjoy freedom.” ~ Rosa Parks

There are so many things we take for granted. Many of the gifts we have been given are privileges. These gifts should not invoke shame when others do not have them, but we need to recognize them as blessings to be grateful for.

You are privileged because you are able to read these words. So many people are not able to obtain an education. You are privileged because you are safe. When you feel safe you go out and explore the world. When you don’t feel safe, you are not curious and only stay with what is familiar. The ability to feel safe and secure is a privilege because so many people in the world do not have that sense of security.

You are privileged because you have food and water. You are privileged if you have a job. If you have access to health care, information at your fingertips, the right to vote, a bed to sleep in…you are privileged.

Recognize your privileges and become aware of the opportunities that these gifts offer you. Then focus on how your privileges could help others. Today, when you remember the importance of saying “I get to…” try adding “…when so many people cannot.”
