How to Meditate

“Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak.” ~ Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati

I have found that meditation is the paint brush to the art of living. Meditation is an act of listening and believing that the time you spend sitting helps to make you and this world a better place. You must go in to come out.

There are many types of meditations but I will share with you the one that I start my day with. I call it the “Great Day Meditation”.

Begin in a comfortable seated position. (You do not need to be at the top of a mountain sitting in a full lotus position.) Close your eyes or focus gently on one spot ahead. Become aware of your breathing. If it helps inhale to a count of 5 and then exhale to a count of five. Let this calm your nervous system and begin to quiet your mind.

Then you will meditate on the Four Infinite Thoughts found in the Yoga Sutras:

  1. Infinite Kindness – desire to bring all living beings happiness. The key is to focus on YOU making this happen even if no one else does.
  2. Infinite Compassion – decision to remove the pain of every living being, by yourself if need be.
  3. Infinite Joy – decision to bring all living beings to a higher form of happiness. This is felt by actually helping and serving others.
  4. Infinite Equanimity – is the decision to help everybody this way – not just our friends and family.

Spend a few minutes filling yourself up and visualizing each of these infinite thoughts. Repeat each of the thoughts above and feel them in your heart knowing that they trigger Infinite Love.
