The Most Important Virtue

“Use kindness; it makes the mind bright and clear as pure water.” ~ Master Patanjali

Growing up my dad would always say, “be sweet.” For my children, they will often hear me say, “choose kindness”. Kindness is the most important virtue. It is the first infinite thought in the meditation I spoke of last week.

Kindness is about bringing happiness to others. Why is this so important? Because it takes you out of your own head and you think about others. And helping others is our purpose in life. Your life is directed by how you treat others. The greatest seed you can plant is the compassionate act of helping someone else.

Stoic philosopher Seneca wrote 2000 years ago in his essay, On the Happy Life, 24.2-3: “A benefit should be kept like a buried treasure, only to be dug up in necessity…Nature bids us to do well by all…Wherever there is a human being, we have an opportunity for kindness.”

Let your life be a gift to others. When you interact with others today, even someone you pass on the street, send them kindness through your thoughts, use your words to fill them up, and let your actions enable others to keep kindness flowing.
